Fat Grafting Q & A
What is facial fat grafting?
Facial fat grafting is a surgical procedure that takes naturally accumulated fat from one area of your body and moves it to your face.
The team at Hudson Face & Eye injects the fat into specific areas of your face, where it restores lost volume. The injected fat acts as a dermal filler, but with no risk of an allergic reaction because it comes from your body.
How does facial fat grafting work?
First, your Hudson Face & Eye provider removes a small amount of fat from your belly or thighs with a technique similar to liposuction. They purify and treat the fat so that only whole, undamaged fat cells remain.
Then, they carefully inject the fat into targeted areas on your face. The fat restores a youthful contour by replacing volume lost over the years. Common areas for facial fat grafting include the lips, cheeks, and deep folds that run from your mouth to nose (nasolabial folds).
Who is a good candidate for facial fat grafting?
The team at Hudson Face & Eye uses facial fat grafting to provide long-lasting, even permanent, treatment of common signs of aging, such as:
- Hollow, dark circles under the eyes
- Nasolabial folds from the nose to the mouth
- Marionette lines from the mouth to the chin
- Facial wrinkles and creases
- Sunken, droopy cheeks
- Hollowed temples
Because fat grafting is a minimally invasive procedure, it’s safe for most people who are in good health. The best way to find out if fat grafting is right for you is to schedule a consultation at Hudson Face & Eye.
What should I expect from facial fat grafting?
First, your Hudson Face & Eye provider listens to you describe your specific concerns and beauty goals in a private consultation. They review your medical history and evaluate your skin before creating a personalized treatment plan.
Fat grafting begins with a liposuction-type procedure that uses local anesthesia and sedation to minimize discomfort. Then, your provider injects the processed fat cells into the areas of your face that need more volume. It’s normal for your body to reabsorb some of the fat.
You can go home a couple of hours after your procedure, but need to arrange for someone else to drive you because you’ll feel drowsy.
Most patients experience only mild discomfort and are able to resume normal activities within a week after fat grafting. You should avoid strenuous exercise for two weeks.
